Tips on Designing a Doorless Shower

Doorless showers are becoming very popular with new homeowners. Doorless showers allow more room in the bathroom. The higher end homes use this new found space to fit a new bath tub or extra sink. For smaller homes, getting more room in the bathroom is a great luxury. Finally, the value of the home increases with installing a doorless shower.

Designing a doorless shower is a very important task that needs to be well thought out. All the materials and blueprint have to be looked over with a magnifying glass. For example, if you are installing glass walls in the shower, you have to make sure they are sealed properly against the tiles or else you will have tile issues down the road when the water leaks in. The blueprint gives you a birds eye view of where you can place anything you want in the bathroom.

Tips for Designing a Doorless Shower

  1. Measurements: Take measurements of your bathrooms. It is imperative to determine what size you have to work with because this will determine what materials you need and how much of it. Using any software, such as Photoshop, Paint or even paper and pencil, sketch out your bathroom. Try your best to scale your sketching properly.
  2. Location: On the paper, mark down where you want the shower to be located. Make sure it is close to the drain as you want the water to escape easily rather than flow all over your bathroom.
  3. Shower Fixture: What type of shower head do you want to install? Each shower head has a different spray radius. Having an overhead shower greatly reduces any splashes whereas a jet shower head will spray the water every where. You can also get a hand held body wash shower head but it will also spray the water everywhere.
  4. Drain: Make sure the shower base has a decline towards the drain so the water has an easy path to travel. Make sure you also discuss with the contractor what the best way to approach the drainage is.
  5. Size: It is recommended that the minimum size of the doorless shower be 4’X4’. Anything smaller than that will be very uncomfortable and feel cramped. If you have a small area, then you can always make your entrance bigger. But this could yield in more splash.
  6. Tiles: The tiles that you install in the base should be non-skid. The last thing you want in your shower is any slipping and falling. Look for tiles that are non skid and easy to install. You will be glad you did this in the long run.
